Name: Wimmalin Laopaiboon
University: WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management
Majors / Field of studies: Master in Management
Period of the stay abroad: 09/2017 - 01/2018
Country: United Kingdom
Reason for the stay abroad: Semester abroad

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in the UK?

My home country is Thailand. Currently, I am studying a masters programme in management at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management, Germany. I decided to study at WHU, because it gives me the opportunity to study abroad for one semester. So, I chose to go to Aston University, Birmingham, UK, because I always wanted to live there once in my life. Moreover, I wanted to learn about the culture and lifestyle of UK people. When the chance came, I did not hesitate to take it at all. At the same time, I was also able improve my English skills.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

After I have selected my partner university for my semester abroad, I have tried to find a schoalarship to support my stay in the UK. One day, I received an announcement email about the call for a Heinrich-J.-Klein scholarship from my university coordinator. I did more resarch on information about the scholarship and I did not hesitate at all to apply for it.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in the UK?

My experieces at Aston University were academically and culturally very unique. I had the opportunity to study in wider areas, such as how to manage consulting projects and solve linear optimization problems by special softwares. Also, I really enjoyed the relationship between students and professors. The professors are very friendly to all students. We always had the opportunity to make an appointment and discuss issues one on one with them. My friends are from different countries around the world. We shared our ideas, differences and stories. The friendships I made are one of the best experiences in my ilfe.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

In the UK it was very different from Germany and Thailand, my home country. The environment at the university was very international. I have learned that getting to know people from different backgrounds can support the creativity in teamwork. I also had many opportunities to learn about the UK education system, where learning by doing is the main key. This system helped me to improve my skills in interviewing, presenting, surveying and teamworking. One example was the consulting role play, where all students had to work in teams and had to solve problems. This was challenging and fun at the same time.

Why would you recommend the HJK scholarship to other students?

It is normally quite difficult to find a scholarship supporting a stay for a semster abroad. This scholarship provided a great opportunity for me to focus mainly on my studies and cultural experiences without worrying about financial issues. Also, the application procedure is not complicated and very straight forward.
Name: Chirag Ranawat
University: École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne
Majors / Field of studies: Microelectronics
Period of the stay abroad: 07/2017-12/2017
Country: Switzerland
Reason for the stay abroad: Final year Bachelor Thesis

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in Switzerland?

École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) today stands for a world-class renowned institution among specialists in Electronics Engineering. I thus applied at EPFL to work on my final year Bachelor Thesis under the guidance of a professor at the Microelectronic Systems Laboratory (LSM). My stay at EPFL helped me not only to deepen my intellectual knowledge regarding research but also to enhance my skills through various EDA and software tools. During my time at EPFL I also attended a Masters level course which helped me to learn new skills necessary to work in the circuit design domain.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

After I received the offer to study at EPFL I was looking for a scholarship to fund my thesis. I came across the HJK scholarship on the EPFL website. The goals of the HJK foundation and its core values resonated highly with my commitment towards technology, which motivated me to apply for the scholarship.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in Switzerland?

My stay at EPFL was immensely fulfilling because the combination of academic learning and an intercultural environment gave me the ideal set up. The drive, ambition and equivalent persistence to excel in my specialized field has been my major learning during the coursework. The liberal, innovation-driven and practical work culture has been another highlight of the university. Even though I had many different experiences, my major takeaway was the motto "quality over quantity" in all aspects.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

In hindsight, writing my thesis at EPFL was more than a coursework for me. The study and research exposed me to new learning methods, smarter pedagogy and learning aids mainly relating to the approach towards research. On a more personal level, it broadened my perspective towards academics as well as life where persistence, passion and dedication are the key factors to success. I made a lot new friends at EPFL, which gave me an insight into the diverse cultures they come from. Also learning French as a new language to express myself better was an exciting challenge for me. My stay at EPFL taught me the eternal value of looking inward to excel outwards!

Why would you recommend the HJK scholarship to other students?

I believe a spark can light a fire only with continuous support. This scholarship has been such a source of inspiration, support and strength to me. It can become a defining factor for students helping them to pursue their chosen research with full dedication and without any resource constraints and lead the path excellence.
Name: Gao, Yingqiang
University: Tongji Universtiy
Majors / Field of studies: Mechatronics Engineering
Period of the stay abroad: 09/2016 - 08/2017
Country: Germany
Reason for the stay abroad: Double degree exchange program

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in Germany?

Tongji University offers many academy exchange opportunities for students every year. I joined the Sino-German cooperative program lead by "Chinesisch-Deutsche Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaft" (CDHAW) of Tongji University and Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz for my final year. This allowed me to take German-taught-courses and write my bachelor thesis in German. Another important reason is that I wanted to know how the German research system works and get prepared for my academic career. My stay in Germany helped me to enhance my academic and international social skills and also gave me the chance to experience the differences between the eastern and western cultures and lifestyles.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

I was informed by a fellow student of CDHAW who has applied for the Heinrich-J.Klein scholarship. I checked the website of the foundation and got to know that the foundation aims to promote international exchange and communication by supporting scholarship holders to stay abroad. I was very fond of the contributions that Dr. Heinrich J. Klein has made to the intercultural understanding, which motivated me strongly to apply for this scholarship.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in Germany?

After being at Hochschule Zittau for 6 months, I got the opportunity to spend the other 6 months at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) for my industrial internship and bachelor thesis. I have never worked in such a great academic atmosphere before, where academics and professionals discuss and present their work with all passion and preciseness. My supervisor from HZDR has not only treated me with great patience and care, but also showed me how to drive research forward. This reinforced me to pursue an academic career after graduation.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

My stay in Germany was really helpful in all aspects. I learned a lot about designing experiments, processing data, analyzing and presenting experiment results among other things. Most important for me was that I have learned the systematic way to do research, to find potential problems, to solve them using different methods which helped me to think deeper and work smarter. Moreover, I could enhance my German skills, which helps me to express myself more correctly and precisely and to be more integrated. I made a lot of new friends in Dresden and spend a really good time in this beautiful city, where I would like to come back to.

Why would you recommend the HJK scholarship to other students?

This scholarship helps you to focus on your academic interest during your stay abroad. The application process gives you enough time to collect all documents and to ask former scholars about their experience. It is also open for bachelor students, which is very important. I am therefore very thankful for the generous scholarship and all kinds of support offered by the foundation.
Name: Sarah Benarey-Meisel
University: IPBS Program at Northeastern University, Boston and ESB Reutlingen
Majors / Field of studies: International Management
Period of the stay abroad: 09/2016 - 12/2016
Country: USA
Reason for the stay abroad: Master Degree

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in the U.S.?

For my Master Degree, I chose a program that gave me the opportunity to study at two locations within a year. The US was elected as the first location, because of its renowned study system. I was curious to experience the American way of teaching, for instance the usage of many Case Studies. In addition, I was keen to get to experience the culture and, knowing that Northeastern University welcomes many internationals, to interact with various cultures, to learn together and from each other. Looking back, I can now tell that the difference to the German system was notable and very challenging at the beginning, but highly enriching to my academic career.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

I was very lucky to come across the HJK Foundation and Schott via mystipendium.de, while I was urgently looking for a scholarship supporting short term stays abroad. The mission statement of the foundation convinced me to apply and the few restrictions made this possible.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in the U.S.?

I highly enjoyed the relationship between students and professors on campus. All faculty members were very supportive and encouraging and no matter what time of the day, they were willing to answer calls of students or set meetings in order to help, explain or discuss. The stay was almost too short to absorb all these amazing opportunities a rewarded American University had to offer. The weekly Hora del Cafe, a get-together to converse in Spanish, is merely one example of the many things I profited from besides the lectures. Moreover, being in the US during election time was unique. It was fascinating to follow the presidential debates, news and especially the student's political attitudes and stances in their own country.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

My four months stay in the US, sponsored by the HJK Foundation, enabled me to grow further in my academic knowledge, but especially in my social skills and thereby broadened my horizon immensely. Very vividly, I recall the various group works I had to do in multicultural teams, struggling with different expectations and behaviors of Colombians, French and Americans. Mutual understanding and cross- cultural communication was a significant tool I became more and more familiar with. Living in one of the major economies of the world, it was highly interesting for me to live to see the American life with all its glamour and drawbacks first hand.

Why would you recommend the HJK scholarship to other students?

The HJK scholarship supports you to fulfill your dreams. As the restrictions for participants are hardly any (other foundations' restrictions made it impossible for me to apply, as my degree's length was less than 2 years), the application process is very convenient and the recruiting team truly gracious it is advisable for all students seeking an international stay to apply for the scholarship. I am very thankful for the support and hope that many other fellows get the chance to participate and to experience a different culture like I had.
Name: Michael Garstka

Country: USA
Reason for the stay abroad: International-Intercultural Exchange

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in New Mexico, USA.?

Studying abroad has been my dream and vision for a long time. I have decided to study at the New Mexico State University, USA within my Master studies and writing the thesis for several reasons. For me personally, it was very interesting as well as educational to get to know different places and cultures. Improving the foreign language and understanding cultural differences is a crucial skill-set for many employees. Moreover the university in New Mexico is a partner of my home university for a long time and has a similar background. Both were founded initially for engineering sciences with a special focus on natural resources extraction technologies.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

As I have been living close to the headquarters of SCHOTT this company is well known in the region I am living in. SCHOTT is known as an outstanding employer in the region, I researched for a matching partner-foundation of my intention to study abroad. I have constantly checked SCHOTT's career website and found the ad for applying for a scholarship by the Heinrich-J-Klein Foundation. By getting more information of the foundation it was important to me to understand who was the founder and what the foundation stands for. So I could see that their values, vision and their global understanding matches my way of thinking and living. Moreover my professor at TU Clausthal has encouraged me to apply.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in the U.S.?

It was challenging, writing my Master thesis in English on a global topic involving two different universities and departments. This has not been done before at my home institution. But, my American and German professors have been very supportive on this. With the help of the HJK scholarship I could solely focus on the research and achieve an outstanding result. On the other hand, during my stay abroad in the U. S., I was able to get a great impression of the American culture. Amongst others, I had the opportunity to visit several national reserve parks with other students. During these trips we had meetings and presentations held by indigenous people, which I will remember as one of the most valuable experiences on the cultural level.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

During my time studying abroad I was able to meet new friends from around the world. Personally I think that an American university is a little bit more diverse. So it was a great experience to argue and exchange different opinions with international students and professors. Such a valuable experience is only possible while studying abroad instead of being in your familiar environment. I was able to build an international network through two universities and I definitely brought my business acumen in a foreign language to a different level.

Why would you recommend the HJK scholarship to other students?

The HJK scholarship is a once in a lifetime experience. The foundations support helps to study abroad on a professional level. For me personally, it was also important that the HJK scholarship funds projects abroad and that the application process is very straight forward and well conducted.

Country: Thailand, Bangkok
Reason for the stay abroad: Exchange program with Thammasat SIIT

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in Thailand?

I went abroad to learn from foreign cultures and people. I was especially eager to learn more about the Asian culture, because I think Asia will play an important role in the future, even more so than today. Thailand is a developing country in Asia and therefore a prime example as to how a country can move forward.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

I became aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich J. Klein foundation through various internet portals regarding scholarships. The reasons of H.J. Klein for creating the foundation impressed me. So I continued to read more about H.J. Klein and the foundation, until I finally decided to apply.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in the Thailand?

The differences between a developing country and a typical western industrial country were quite astounding. Additionally, I realized that it is very important to know the culture for a deeper understanding. Another experience I have made was, that I felt very welcomed, as all Thai people were very helpful, even when it was difficult to communicate with each other. I will never forget this friendliness. Professionally I learned more about economics, management and statistics although my major is mechanical engineering. I deliberately emphasized mercantile courses and noticed that these courses were quite interesting as well.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

I think my stay abroad showed me that Germany is only one small country in the world. There are many more countries that do not have the same conditions and standards of living. Free education should also not be taken for granted. A lot of students have to pay high fees. I am grateful for my situation and now even more motivated to learn and grow personally.

Why would you recommend the HJK scholarship to other students?

I highly recommend the scholarship of H.J. Klein, because the purpose of H.J. Klein is to give people a chance to go abroad. H.J. Klein himself got invited by US citizens to go to America. Going abroad is difficult without support even today. I think he recognized this so he created a big chance for many people. For this opportunity I am very grateful.
Name: Kirsten Wellkamp

The positive experiences I have made as an exchange student during my Bachelor encouraged me in my desire to visit a more distant and cultural diverse country. My personal interest in China grew especially through the contact with Chinese friends and study colleagues. Shanghai offers with its western orientation and the huge difference between modernism and the tradition the perspective to discover China and its different facets. During my semester in Shanghai I wanted to experience and understand the differences between the German and Chinese culture. A stay at Tongji University was the perfect opportunity to develop my professional and social skills as well as to broaden my international expertise.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

I searched in the internet for suitable scholarships to get some support for my semester in Shanghai. Through the website of mystipendium.de I got to the website of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation. The Foundation supports international exchange and its purpose and aims were suitable to my motive spending a semester abroad.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in China?

The most crucial experience I made in China was that I could not understand the Chinese letters. It was challenging to communicate as I could not understand the people, neither the spoken nor the written language as they barely spoke English. It was interesting to get a lot of attention as an European, but luckily my Chinese study colleagues helped me a lot to get in touch with the Chinese people.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

For my personal development it was really interesting to live and experience the differences between the German and the Chinese culture, e.g. eating habits and communicating with foreigners and the different interests how students spent their free time. I met great new friends and I hope they will come to Germany in the future, so that I can introduce them to my home country. For my professional development, I can now imagine to live in China for a longer time, for example as an Expat in my future company, as I learned a lot of the intercultural differences and am more than happy to get the chance of that kind of experience.

Name: Apurva Patel
University: TU Braunschweig
Majors / Field of studies: Computational Sciences in Engineering
Period of the stay abroad: 10/2014 - 10/2015
Country: Germany
Reason for the stay abroad: Master's program (M.Sc.)

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in Germany?

Working in the industry for 2 years directly after my bachelor studies was an important step for me. It made me realize the role simulation and computation play in current engineering scenarios and I got curious to know more about this new emerging area of study. It allows for the simulation and optimization of processes as well as solving problems through meticulous on-screen techniques, thus saving time and money. Germany was an instant choice due to the variety of specializations available and courses being offered that suited my interests. Also it would be exciting to experience a new culture, meet new people and also learn a new language. So after some effort and applications, I enrolled at TU Braunschweig for a M.Sc. in Computational Sciences.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

I was aware of SCHOTT as a company due to a plant near my home in India. Regarding the foundation and scholarship, my course co-ordinator suggested me to check mystipendium.de for options to finance my studies, which led me to the website of Heinrich-J.-Klein Stiftung. The foundation's motive of promoting an international exchange and sponsoring science is very convincing.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in Germany?

Culturally, its food. Coming from a vegetarian background I find it difficult to find good vegetarian food options wherever I travel. And even if I plan to cook some Indian food then I could find some of the ingredients only in cities like Berlin or Hamburg. Its weird at first but later on you do find new & innovative ways to cook with whatever you have.
Professionally, the business attire seemed quite different to me. In India, it was not common to wear jeans to work. But here it was different, which I found quite amusing.
As well, a challenging experience for me has been that some of the research material I need for my study is only available in German. Therefore, I need to spend more time on learning than normal. But with discipline and the help of fellow students I managed to overcome this challenge.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

Learning German has been an crucial advantage both personally and professionally. I can now have confidence at work and interact in a new environment as well as build networks more easily and efficiently within Germany. Also, meeting people from different nationalities and cultures has broadened my way of thinking and made me more "international". I made acquaintances & friends from various parts of the world.
On a professional level, a great advantage of Germany is that research institutes & the industry have close cooperations with universities. This has enabled me to get direct exposure to the simulation techniques being used in the industry.

Why would you recommend the HJK scholarship to other students?

I would recommend the HJK scholarship to other students as it provides a strong financial support for the studies and grants a lot of liberty in the execution of the stay abroad. If students decide to present their results at the end of the scholarship they have the opportunity to visit SCHOTT and get an insight on its products & technologies.

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in the U.S.?

The reason for me going abroad was to expand my academic horizon and to challenge myself. Princeton University is known for its superb science faculties and when I got the opportunity to work there, I knew I had to seize the opportunity. During my bachelor's thesis I worked on a challenging, yet extremely interesting project about non-ribosomal peptite synthetases which show promising results for valuable applications in the pharmaceutical sector. I wanted to dig deeper and find out more about this subject. Since the research group in Princeton uses highly advances techniques, I could live up to that goal.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

I looked for a foundation which supports research projects of Master students. The HJK Foundation is one of the very few foundations which offer this kind of opportunity. Besides, I really support the idea of intercultural awareness and exchange, so I could easily identify with the scholarship.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in the U.S.?

The most stunning culturally experience were the holidays. I had the chance to spent Thanksgiving with an American family and I celebrated Halloween with a lof of other students in the dorm.
On a professional level, my most crucial professional experience were the excellent funding and thus, the world class laboratory equipment at Princeton. Moreover, the weekly talks with leading scientists in Chemistry Department were absolutely inspiring.

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in the U.S.?

I went to Stanford University for a research internship in an Organic Chemistry Lab as part of my master program from my home university. Personally, I wanted to improve my knowledge and gather experience by working in a new environment. Moreover, the Trost Group at Stanford offers a very high academic level specialized on my research interests. My project related to enantioselective catalysis reactions that could be of great use in the synthesis of fluorine containing pharmaceuticals. At Stanford, I was taught in different scientific/lab techniques and expanded my horizon on the theoretical part of my subject. Not to forget, I wanted to spend time living abroad for cultural impressions.

How did you become aware of SCHOTT and the Heinrich-J.-Klein Foundation? What convinced you to apply for the scholarship?

I noticed the Heinrich-J.-Klein Scholarship on the platform mystipendium.de. Its international orientation and the extensive range of promoted scientific areas made it perfectly fitting for my purposes. In the sense of Dr. Heinrich J. Klein I wanted to get in touch with other mentalities and cultures and support the international exchange of knowledge in science. The scholarship made it possible to come up with the necessary tuition fee and living expenses.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in the U.S.?

The American kindness makes it easy for you to feel comfortable from the beginning on. Once I made new friends, I quickly felt more at home. The vast range of opportunities for recreational activities - in California you can do anything from surfing to skiing - helped a lot with settling in.
In the lab, it was the first time for me to work on a research project on my own. Dealing with the foreign environment at the same time, this level of indepence proved to be quite a challenge. Yet once I started to learn how to deal with the very high scope of autonomy I enjoyed my work each day a little more. Learning to structure and carry out the research by my own was the major development I went through.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

Living in a new country with new people and a foreign language let me grow personally. Furthermore, doing research at Stanford gave me valuable insights how it is to work and communicate in an international environment. Professionally, I was prepared very well for my upcoming master's thesis both experimentally and theoretically. I got to know the daily working life in a research group very well.

Why did you decide to go abroad for your studies? What was the purpose of your stay in Norway?

International experience has always been important for me in order to develop both personally and professionally. As part of my studies in the Netherlands, I chose to do an internship in an internationally operating organization to finish my Bachelor studies in an inspiring, diverse team. Especially working in a virtual team, i.e. exclusively via web conferences and E-Mail, seemed to be an exciting feature for this stay abroad. I hoped that the experiences I would gain from the internship in this environment would prepare me better for a career in an internationally operating organization by developing my cultural awareness as well as my adaptability and agility to deal with new situations.

What was the most crucial experience (professionally and culturally) you've made in Norway?

During my stay in Norway I experienced new challenges both professionally and culturally. During the last 5 years I have lived in several countries and I never experienced a severe culture shock. However, coming to Norway proved to be a much bigger challenge than anticipated. The geographical proximity to Germany made me being less aware of potential differences. I learnt that it is always important to stay aware of cultural diversity and approach these situations with an open-minded attitude. From a professional point of view, the most important experience was working in a diverse, virtual team for a start-up company that was operating with a lot of freedom. I learned that mutual trust as a corporate value is the basis for effective working processes, especially in an international virtual team.

How did your stay abroad help your personal & professional development?

My time working in an international and multicultural team has enabled me to grow personally by further developing my passions about social impact and social responsibility in business. Due to working in a virtual team, I had to take on a lot of responsibility. Although I could structure my work individually I still had to provide my input for the team and comply with the overall strategy of the project. In order to meet these goals I developed a great deal of discipline.
